Ensuring Security and Compliance in Healthcare Payment Processing
VisitPay, a leader in healthcare payment processing, needed a scalable, secure payment solution after being acquired by R1 RCM. Their goal was to bring payment processing in-house, reducing reliance on third-party vendors while ensuring PCI DSS and HIPPA compliance. Clear Function developed a custom payment orchestration platform (POP) to streamline transactions, minimize security risks, and provide seamless integration with existing healthcare systems.
The Challenge
VisitPay faced multiple challenges, including a small internal engineering team with limited fintech product experience, PCI compliance complexities, and technical issues with mobile card readers. Additionally, there was no pre-selected POS system, requiring multiple proofs of concept to determine the best solution for their needs.
Goals
The primary goal was to develop a scalable, flexible, and secure payment orchestration layer that could be used across R1 RCM facilities nationwide. The solution needed to minimize PCI scope, protect patient data, and seamlessly integrate with multiple payment gateways while ensuring high reliability and minimal downtime.
Our Work
Clear Function built a custom POP with an SDK that allowed external payment portals and POS systems to integrate seamlessly without increasing PCI scope. We implemented a payment orchestration system using APIs to route transactions securely and evaluated multiple POS systems to select the best option. Additionally, we provided in-depth logging and visibility, making tracking and resolving issues easier.
Outcomes
Through close collaboration with VisitPay’s product management team, Clear Function delivered a robust, future-proof payment solution.
The new POP, or payment hub, significantly improved efficiency, security, and flexibility of VisitPay’s payment processing system. The solution reduced PCI compliance risks by creating a secure transaction key system, ensuring no patient data could be exposed. Clients praised the high level of logging and error tracking, calling the Card Not Present (CNP) system “flawless.”
